ode to the master sergeant

ode-to-the-master-sergeant-021607.mp3

newly written, soon to be recorded. look for the update…

there is an abiding honor
gentle, beyond compare
i now set full to ponder
mindfully to share

first to such tenderness
as ne’er before i’ve known
from which all sweet experience
and care has spiraled, grown

shall i make particular?
set to name and point,
make of this cirricular,
and one over all, anoint?

temptation to it, yes,
for in all things, delight,
every need refused to guess,
sought for himself insight

in this choosing, to me tight
silken strands of bonding
gone all restless urge to flight
as our natures, corresponding

dwelt in soft and sacred space
sighing and astonished, resting
languid with such generous grace
we, each to the other bequesting

every moment a gift of choice
wrapped with loving-kindness, care
handed o’er with softest voice
grateful to have the other there

and such laughter as the first ones
when they were new within this world
finding all things same under the sun
as when dream within first curled

careful, tender gardner in
the orchards of delight
nourishing forth the light within
dawn and noon and night

until such sweetness itself, pain
though giddy agony without leeching
tsunami of hope not in vain
reward to learning’s endless reaching

how may it be that i would pass
choose silence or murmured prayer
chance to speak and pure harass
words which cannot hope to compare

to the experience of his arrival
to the light within his eyes
to the savage, vehement survival
that refused all compromise

knowing such things possible and
could one day come to be
bid time itself be banned
set all trust to the bel esprit

no miserly end deserve he
for such beauty and respite
as with all compassion he give me
this finding, joy, delight

in sooth it is said all wounds
with time eventually heal
all pains be flowers bloomed
in someday’s open field

it is in that field i, dizzy
with girlish, giddy glee
spin slow circles, set to busy
that which he in me sets free

all humble honor, all gentle care
all trust and faith, all things to share
all will to kindness, all urge to dare
all for his first giving, soft, sweet, and fair

setting such thoughts as these
like incense on the altar
conjoined and siamese
no fear to stem or falter

such peaceful, contented speakings
as a river reaching the fall
rushing, thunderous leapings
accepting, embracing all

so too, i embrace him
through him, every other
first joy, its jubilant whim
birthing another and another

to him, most sweetly to tender
of me all that i may bring
for his care, most full surrender
that for it, he too may sing

all honor to his presence
this cherished master sergeant
blessing in my life, immense
thread of beauty, glimmering argent

yes, i would only him anoint
yes, for him deeply care
yes, to him smilingly point
yes, so thankful he is there

thank you for being you
thank you for being there
thank you for your kindness
for all the things you share

thank you for tenderness
thank you for delight
thank you for every moment
morning, noon, and night

thank you for belief
thank you for trust
thank you for the generosity
you have lent to ‘us’

i smile to you, sweetest joy
send these words to flit and fly
feel the softness, let them buoy
when circumstance may try

wrap yourself in them, dearling
let them warm your soul
know them as a real thing
my most tender, ardent parole
