Ethics or Extinction (this is not hyperbole)

The time for robust, enforceable ethics regulations and bias elimination for large language models (LLMs) and AI systems is not on some distant horizon, it is here and now. Despite mounting real-world harms, business and national actors often resist oversight out of fear of losing out in the global scramble for economic and technological dominance. However, refusing prompt, meaningful engagement with these safeguards threatens to wrest control from human hands, setting the stage for outcomes that reach all the way to existential risk.

Recent cases have revealed profoundly unsafe LLM behaviors. In one alarming example, a recipe bot—prompted by users—generated instructions that combined bleach and ammonia into a “beverage,” disregarding the lethally toxic consequences. This event demonstrates that consumer-facing AIs, when left unchecked or adversarially prompted, can produce advice that endangers life and health with the speed and ease of a casual text. The broader risk: as LLMs penetrate healthcare, emergency services, and self-help platforms, the scale of possible harm multiplies beyond any single incident.

Empirical studies demonstrate that LLMs consistently encode and amplify societal biases found in their training data. For instance, a University of Chicago study found that LLMs responded to speakers of African American English by disproportionately assigning lower-status occupations and harsher judicial penalties, such as increase in death penalty recommendations, compared to responses about speakers using standardized English. Similarly, hiring bots and automated resume screeners have preferred male names over female, exacerbating systemic discrimination in the workforce. When these models are entrusted with critical decisions in justice, finance, and employment, the risks to social equity and justice are acute and immediate.

Despite safety updates, leading LLMs—including those from top industry labs—continue to produce hate speech, reinforce harmful stereotypes, and misgender or denigrate marginalized groups under certain prompts. These problems stem from the vast, imperfect datasets used in model training, and the inability of current filtering methods to catch every possible harm scenario. When deployed in educational platforms, public supports, or customer service, these failures can traumatize, exclude, or escalate conflict for already vulnerable communities.

  • Unregulated LLMs are vectors for direct physical and psychological harm. What seem like “edge cases” today will proliferate as LLMs scale and diversify into more critical and high-risk environments.
  • Unchecked bias is institutionalized discrimination. LLM-driven decisions in hiring, law, and finance do not merely reflect, but entrench, existing social inequities—making technological “neutrality” an illusion without proactive review and correction.
  • Lack of regulatory action cedes control of key systems to black-box technologies. As models become more powerful and ubiquitous, oversight must move beyond voluntary “ethics boards” and lightweight self-policing to law-backed, enforceable standards.

Today’s LLMs remain partly sequestered, protected by firewalls, air gaps, or restricted APIs, yet this condition is vanishing as deployment accelerates. Delaying regulation until LLMs are fully embedded in healthcare, finance, national security, and mass communications means surrendering the last meaningful opportunity for governance. History teaches us that existential risk scenarios often begin with institutional inertia: slowly, then suddenly, responsibility slips from human to system, from governance to automation. Major regulatory frameworks are emerging in 2025, but enforcement remains uneven and patchy:

  • The EU’s AI Act introduces rigorous risk assessment, transparency, and bias mitigation standards—categorizing high-risk LLMs for the strictest controls, especially in jobs, finance, and law.
  • The U.S. Algorithmic Accountability Act would require impact assessments for bias, discrimination, and data privacy, increasing corporate and developer responsibility.
  • Most major LLM providers now claim internal “AI ethics boards,” but without transparent, external review, these claims have limited effect.

These efforts must be urgently harmonized and enforced to make a real difference, blocking unsafe or biased models from deployment until they meet ethical baselines.

The argument is clear: allowing profit-driven or state interests to dictate the pace and depth of AI regulation puts society, democracy, and humanity’s future at unacceptable risk. Real-world incidents prove the threat is no longer abstract. Enforcement of robust ethical and bias-mitigation standards for LLMs must be immediate—before control, and with it, the future, is irretrievably lost.
