there is a list of things that need not be said. or so the story goes. they need not be said because they are known by all involved. perhaps saying them devalues them or somehow neutralizes them. maybe. i cannot say i know.
it surprises me sometimes, the things that show up on the list of things that need not be said. but that’s only because i never knew they need not be said. guess that makes me the odd one out, because i’ve always needed to hear them and rarely (if ever) have.
so i write them. or i say them. whenever i have the chance. just because there’s no way to really know if the person i’m saying them to knows they need not be said…. or if they’re just saying they need not be said because they also secretly believe them untrue; the clever compliment to ease the parting.
you never know they are things that need not be said until you know it. i’ve heard this list exists. i’ve heard some of the things that are supposed to be on it. as i have told you, i am often surprised. as i have told you, there is at least one reason i am so.
here’s another thing to go on the list of things that need not be said…. i love you just because you ARE you.
maybe it is a thing that need not be said. if it is, forgive me. i do not yet know it as such and so, obviously, cannot help myself.
